External Links

External links are a useful tool to use for blogs, websites, and even social media to provide extra information to the viewers if the author has no more information to use from. Information is great too as allow their audience to direct them to different sites that the viewers can learn more about these endangered species more and educate them from the source but also show how they can help these threatened species like donation, adopt one of these species or get involved with these organizations.

Here are some links to these wildlife organizations:

Click on the names of the organizations to view their websites.

Infographic

Infographics are graphic visualization tools used to display data, information, or knowledge that viewers can read and view easily. Infographics are more effective to use for viewers as “infographic, when used as visual communication tool, could provide effective communication” (Vanichvasin, 2013, p. 135) so they can process and understand the data and information better for them. Using infographics about threatened species can help viewers understand and communicate for them better than a bunch of texts and numbers and encourage the viewers to do something in hopes of saving these species and educating them on the matter.

Infographic chart about the Asian tiger (Decklar, n/a)

This infographic designed by Jeanne Decklar shows an infographic chart about the Asian tiger (Decklar, n/a). This infographic communicates facts about the Asian tiger using text and illustration to represent the data being presented like basic information about them, how their population is declining and why they are declining.

Infographic Poster about critically endangered animals (Davison, 2019)

This infographic poster designed by Stefan Davison shows about five different critically endangered animals and information about them (Davison, 2019). The animals featured are the kakapo, red wolf, Chinese giant salamander, the gharial, and the largetooth sawfish where have illustrations of these animals and large texts in simple and few texts why they are declining and numbers to show their population number.

These two infographics show to communicate to the audience to understand the visualization better about the threatened species as educating but in a simplified form so easy to understand and communicate but also encourage the audience to do something in hopes of saving these amazing animals.

Animation

“Animation is the rapid display of a sequence of static images that creates the illusion of movement” (Harrison & Hummell, 2010, p. 20). Animation is an amazing multimedia tool that is used in the world today. Animation is videos that allow for more creativity and freedom with the animators can express what they desire with anything. Animation is usually used for entertainment for children but it's more than that as can be used for narration and education. The use of animation can captivate viewers and educate them about threatened species and have empathy for these animals.

This is a 2D animation was created by Learning Junction about endangered and extinct animals that are targeted at kids (Learning Junction, 2018). The animation is child-friendly in appearance so be fun and educational for the kids to watch. The contents in this animation have a narrator and friendly-looking animations explaining why these animals' numbers are declining and their current situation, this video is to help a younger audience about endangered species and educate them about these animals.

This 3D animation by Lionheart Production tells a story of four different animals' perspectives in a musical format (Lionheart production, 2016). This animation follows a rhino, pelican, whale, and a baby fur seal where they sing how they are enjoying life peaceful then as the animation continues depicts humans as monsters as shows the animals are being hunted, poached, and killed for various reasons as the animals express their dreams and hopes are destroyed with a grim ending. This animation is to have the audience empathize and feel sad for these animals as the animations are accurate on what is going on with these animals in real life and if the things that are happening in this animation will continue, then these animals will be extinct if nothing is done.

Video

Videos is a multimedia file that plays an important in society today. Videos are used by users everywhere and can be viewed and used by everyone who has a television, smartphone, or computer to be used as advertisement, entertainment, and even education.  Videos can be used to save threatened species as “graphics, video, and other media can help by interesting and engaging learner” (Zhang, Zhou, Briggs & Nunamaker Jr, 2006, p. 16) as they can educate and engage with viewers better to seal real-life footage of these species and what they have been through.

This video by Nation Geographic Wild shows an educational video of the endangered animals that are classified as critically endangered (Nat Geo Wild, 2017). It shows images of each animal and described the population and how they are declining. This video serves as a way to educate the viewers on the most critically endangered animals using images, graphics, and big text so viewers can learn about them in a simple and effective way than reading about it in text with no visuals, by the end it encourages the viewers to help save these species from going extinct.

This video, by Protect All Wildlife provided by the International Animal Rescue (Protect All Wildlife, 2018) shows an orangutan home being destroyed from logging by a company as the orangutan tries its best to save its home with no chance of stopping the logging. This video is to show a real-life scenario that these animals are suffering and show the reasons they are declining to empathize with the orangutan and how heartbreaking it is losing its home and being helpless about it.

This clip from the documentary series Planet Earth narrated by David Attenborough discusses about the rarest big cat in the world, the Amur leopard (BBC Earth, 2017). This clip show footage of the Amur Leopard mother taking care of her cub to survive in these dire times as at the time of filming there are only 40 amur leopards left in the wild and the numbers are falling. This clip is to show viewers the life of these beautiful leopards and their survival as soon can be gone from the earth.

Images

Images are an important multimedia file that users and society use daily for anything as they are great ways to tell a story. “Images were the story” (Huff, 1998, p. 582) as it is described as images tell a narration or story that explains and described better than text as show what is going as a visual narration. Images can be used to help animals that are in danger that can soon be extinct as viewers can look at these images to admire the beautiful have shock and empathy for these animals and encourage people to help these threatened species.

Rhino being poached for its horns by photographer Sarah Nelson

Nelson (Nelson, 2017) shows that has been killed and then have it’s horn violently taken out and some cases left alive when horns being taken out as the rhino is suffering in immense pain as their horns will be used for either Chinese medicine or a luxury item to show high status. This single image can convey lots of emotion just by looking at it and tell the whole story just from this single photograph.

An illustration depicting the future of Polar Bears. (Rosenberg, 2018)

This illustration depicts the future of polar bears (Rosenberg, 2018). This illustration shows climate change or global warming destroying the polar bears home in Antarctica be melted gone and have barely any ice left for the polar bears to live on and soon the number will decline until the polar bears are extinct. This illustration can empathy with the audience as not only polar bears but the artic as well and a grim reminder that his could be their future if nothing changes.

A cartoon comic that depicts that threatened species are not a priority (Judge, 2016)

This comic shows, people like the government don’t care about threatened species like polar bears as care more about the industry than the environment (Judge, 2016). This comic interprets how machinery from industries will lead to threatening species death like the polar bears as the giraffe looks on as know they can be next. The purpose is to show a short visual story so the readers can understand the story in a creative way and soon can show what can happen soon if nothing changes or if nothing is done.

About Endangered Animals

Endangered animals are defined as species that are at a high risk of going extinct in the wild. As of right now, there are currently “41,415 species on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, and 16, 306 of these are threatened with extinction.” (Day, 2011, p. 3) which is out 8.7 million of different species that currently live on this planet (Black, 2011).

Animals are like tigers, elephants, rhinoceros, and even sea turtles are all endangered with many other animals due to human involvement and activities such as poaching, hunting, pollution, and even the destruction of their habitat.

Hunting and poaching have played a major role in the decline of animals from humans as they see hunting animals for fun, sport, or even as a hobby. But the main reason why animals are being hunted or poached due to markets wants to turn them into products like their fur, skin or any internal body parts and be turned into a luxury item, piece of clothing or even as medicine. A prime example of this is the animal known as the Pangolin where they are eight species of them and all are threatened on the verge of extinction. “The pangolin, now recognized as the world’s most trafficked mammal, is currently undergoing population collapse across South and Southeast Asia” (Aisher, 2016, p. 317). The reason why they are being hunted and poached is because of how profitable they are with their scales and meat as they are being hunted used for traditional Chinese medicine, exotic food clothing items, and other products.

The Pangolin, the most traffic species (Sarore, 2021)

Pollution plays a major role in the animal population declining as it has a toxic effect on the animals that destroys their homes and affect their physical well-being. Plastic pollution, in particular, has drastically destroyed marine life’s as it poisons their home especially when certain marine species as “over 260 species including invertebrates, turtles, fish, seabirds and mammals, have been reported to ingest or become entangled in plastic debris, resulting in impaired movement and feeding, reduced reproductive output, lacerations, ulcers, and death” (Wabnitz & Nichols, 2010, p. 1).

Sea Turtle eating plastic that is toxic to them (Mayne, 2006)

Destruction of wildlife habitats like the forest due to human activities like deforestation, mining, and even agriculture. A prime example of the deforestation of tropical forests in Southeast Asian countries where they destroy these areas mainly for harvesting palm oil as palm oil is used worldwide and profitable. “Tropical forests inhabited by endangered orangutans, rhinos, tigers, and elephants in South-east Asia are threatened by deforestation, including oil palm expansion” (Gatti & Velichevskaya, 2020, p. 1) meaning at the cost of harvesting palm oil, the price are the homes of these endangered species home which would lead to their decline and eventual extinction if nothing is done.

But another big factor that causes numbers of species to decline is climate change which is mainly from humans and man-made activities. Climate change is the change in weather patterns with carbon emission going into the atmosphere as “carbon emissions and entailing climate change also produces habitat loss and species decline” (Sollund, 2012, p. 137).

Animals play an important in the world, especially the eco-system where animals or any living organism live and functions, should a particular species suddenly go extinct it would lead to dire consequences. If these animals have gone it can lead to an overpopulation of species that has the potential to spread disease and destroy forest when stated by Dr. Robert Baldwin by that if a predator goes extinct then can cause a trophic cascade and using deer as an example stated that “they can really change the ecosystem because they can destroy forests, and they also carry disease” (Williams, 2021). But other consequences to the extinction of a species can lead to disrupting the food chain, destroying pollination, and destroying the ecosystem as this system relies on other species to function and if one is gone, then the whole ecosystem will be gone with it.

Not only does the extinction affect the environment and eco-system but also affects humans’ life that has social and economic consequences. Most countries rely on animals for income as they are a “contribution of wildlife tourism to poverty reduction and local livelihoods'' (Homewood, Trench & Brockington, 2012, p. 2), as this helps local communities with income but also the countries tourism industry like multiple countries in Africa that heavily rely on eco-tourism from the animals.

There have been solutions to help these endangered species, researchers and conservationists will use resources and extra effort to ensure these species survive and repopulate their numbers. Some methods are using protection to prevent poachers from targeting them but this is more of a short-term solution. There are long-term solutions that have been efficient and sustainable are educational campaigns to teach and encourage people about these endangered species and how they can assist them. Another long term is zoos and animal conservation breed animals in captivity and reintroduces them to the wild. But seem the most efficient method is boycotting products made from these endangered species as they are being hunted and turned into luxury items to be seen as a high class by “collectors of specimens and exotic pets, luxury products such as caviar” (Hall, MilnerGulland & Courchamp, 2008, p. 77), with the boycott of these products as fewer animals will be killed and turn into these products.

Introduction

Animals are majestic and beautiful living creatures that roam the earth but are in constant threat of becoming extinct and being wiped out of the world.

Reasons, why animals are close to becoming extinct, are close to being extinct are mainly human activities like poaching, hunting, pollution, or the destruction of their home. Climate change also plays a key role in why the animals population is drastically declining as affects their way of living that can lead to their downfall.

With these animals gone, no one will be able to see them walk on the earth again but also have long-term consequences on humans. The extinction of animals can lead to a negative impact on the environment and as well to the social and economic in society.

In this day and age, multimedia is what is being used in people and social lives every day as they are integrated into our lives. Multimedia is something we use and rely on as they become an important aspect of our life’s as stated that “multimedia has become an indispensable aspect in contemporary daily life” (Guan, 2017, p. 490). Multimedia can be something like text, audio, images, videos, animation, or infographics as they are elements that society and people use constantly and rely on.

Multimedia can be used to help save endangered animals from going extinct as they can be tools to be used to save their lives and assist the population numbers as multimedia is used by everyone and can be used to save them.
